| Program Notes: | "Cowboys", also known as "Five Songs for Five Notes", was commissioned by the Christa McAuliffe commissioning project and was dedicated to the Nicholas A. Ferri Middle School Music Department; Daniel Coyne, music director. Graded as II+ in difficulty, the work deals with melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic clichés using the pentatonic scale. During the fourth movement of the work, band members are instructed to make sounds that could be thought to be associated with ghost towns. The final movement affords the brass section the opportunity to explore sounds not usually associated with their instruments. The five movements are entitled "Overture", "Hop-A-Long" (5/8 time), "Chinese Laundry Waltz", "Ghost Town Hoe-Down and Shoot-out", and "Stampede". Portions of the program notes were extracted from those written by Anthony Conrad Mengelkamp for the CD, "Music of Daniel Bukvich," published in 1997; edited for content by Susan G. Weaver. |
| Sketches/Composition Notes: | There is a theatrical "shoot-out" scene in the last movement which can be fun for students. |
